Integrating functional near infrared spectroscopy into the assessment of executive functions and achievement in preschool children
Details
Behavioral, Healthy Volunteers Behavior, Brain/Head Age: 3 - 5 years
Gender: Any
In this study we want to learn about how young children develop the ability to complete tasks that require different amounts of attention, and impulse control, and how these abilities relate to their brain activation. These abilities are often called "executive functions." The information that we get from these games has helped us better understand how children's impulse control and attention change across the preschool years. We want to know how performance on these games relates to brain activation using a system that is called a "near infrared spectroscopy" or "fNIRS" device. This device simply shines a light through a headband, and measures the amount of oxygen consumed and "mental effort" expanded. Children in the study are asked to play several computer games while we measure their brain oxygen consumption.
