Apixaban in Nephrotic Syndrome

Apixaban (Eliquis) is an FDA-approved blood thinning medication. There is a need to understand how apixaban (Eliquis) is affected by having a medical condition called nephrotic syndrome. This study will use blood tests to gather information on drug levels of apixaban and on how apixaban affects measurements of clotting ability. Comparing these measurements in people with nephrotic syndrome to measurements in people without nephrotic syndrome may lead to a better understanding about how to use apixaban in patients who have nephrotic syndrome. We also want to understand how your genetics might also affect the behavior of apixaban. This study will also give direction for future research and provide more information for making clinical decisions regarding apxiaban use.

Some participants will also be randomized (chosen like a flip of a coin) to try a new and easy kind of at-home cervical cancer screening kit.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking volunteers for a research study testing the efficacy of the FDA approved medication bupropion in reducing binge drinking episodes. Bupropion is currently used to treat depression, but recently, studies have suggested that bupropion might be helpful in the treatment of binge drinking. The study will be "blinded" which means that neither you nor the study staff will know if you are taking bupropion or placebo. Participants will take the study medication for 3 months and attend 10 visits.

The purpose of this study is to assess the safety and tolerability of the use of an investigational drug, HAL-MPE1. This drug may benefit individuals with peanut allergy in the future. Participation in this study is not expected to benefit participants. This drug is injected into the back of the arm on a weekly basis for approximately 20 weeks. Subjects will be observed in the research unit at UNC for 4 hours after injections.

The goal of this study is to further learn how a healthy human brain changes and works, specifically at a very young age. This study will help us learn more about children's mental, emotional and behavioral development, as well as understanding the possible causes of learning disabilities and neurodevelopmental disorders. This will be done by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the child's brain during various times of development. Not only is MRI a safe and non-invasive procedure, but there will be no medication or sedation used for this study at any point.
Sulforaphane for the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder

The purpose of this research study is to determine if sulforaphane, a nutritional supplement made from broccoli sprout and seed extracts, is safe and effective for treating symptoms of autism in young men with moderate to severe autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Participants will take sulforaphane or placebo tablets for a total of 12 weeks, and caregivers will complete behavioral rating scales related to autism. We are also studying the effects of taking sulforaphane on the gut microbiome (bacteria in the digestive tract).

The UNC Center for Functional GI and Motility Disorders is recruiting healthy men and women over the age of 18 for a research study. We are investigating the normal values for anal and rectal pressures in the general population. This information will be used to distinguish normal from abnormal results when the diagnostic equipment is used. For this particular study, we are asking you to fill out a series of questionnaires and participate in two commonly used diagnostic procedures, called anorectal manometry and a balloon evacuation test. Both tests are currently used in clinics to help diagnose lower GI disorders. No treatment or diagnosis will be given during this research study.
